NION is a cluster project by which we synthesize unique cultures from ancient times to modern times in Japan and generate the “upgrade version” on the river side in Berlin.
We can see the changes of social innovation most clearly in the cities. The best ideas spring up like grassroots, emerging in between spaces of dreams of the capital city policy makers. It has become clear that the ideal city is a place that grows both from top down and bottom up.
The city of Berlin is a vibrant location where alternative lifestyle, creativity and innovation are fostered, and self-organization is naturally driven from the bottom up. As a green city, technology and cultural ecosystems are characterized by progressive and proliferative mechanisms. Berlin is not only the place where artists and start-up culture mingle, but has become a site of yearning for citizens from around the world.
NION combines unique cultures and ecosystems ranging from ancient to modern Japan. It will include the essence of manufacturing technology and culture of Japan, commercial facilities, learning institutions, access to traditional culture, wellness and social community. It will be a lead project and an organic ecosystem that will shine far beyond the borders of Berlin.
NION might be a password
The meaning of the word NION is multifaceted. Blending a reference to the country name, NIHON, with a word from the Irish Ogham alphabet where NION means “a fork,” and Japanese NION that means “two sounds,“ NION represents that new sound where Berlin and Japan meet and overlap, striking a new harmony for the 21st century. As such, NION might possibly be a password for social innovation.
