The garden stretches over the roofs of the whole of NION, becoming the connecting entity of all clusters of the NION eco-system.
In Japanese culture, kami reside in nature and are worshipped. Kami can be elements of a landscape, as well as beings and qualities that these beings witheld. NION listens to these invisibles, who express themselves with not necessarily our comprehensible languages but by other means. How do we creatively and playfully incorporate their perspectives into NION garden design?
We envision NION located by the river and enriched with trees, adding to Berlin’s open-space culture and green parks. NION is a horizontally open hill with moderate slopes that covers over and annexes to multiple buildings. Community farms and parks are equipped within it. Our riverside hill will bestow benefits for biodiversity in the metropolis.
Re-create the city in a biodiverse way
The diversity of flora and fauna is constantly decreasing by the growing habitat of urban areas and constant intrusion of humans. However, despite the expansion of the cities, we are actually able to re-create and re-structure our cities in a biodiverse way to enhance the variety and growth of animals and plants within. It can be shown that life in the city and the promotion of nature are not opposites, but can harmonize with each other.
NION, an experimental body in the new urban living, we are to give back what nature has gifted us.
